Yann LeCun, primary AI scientist at Meta, said that DeepSeek’s success represented a triumph for AI designs, not always a win for China over the U.S. Meta is behind a popular open-source AI model called Llama.

“To individuals who see the efficiency of DeepSeek and think: ‘China is going beyond the US in AI.’ You read this wrong. The correct reading is: ‘Open source designs are exceeding exclusive ones’,” he stated in a post on LinkedIn.

“DeepSeek has benefited from open research and open source (e.g. PyTorch and Llama from Meta). They developed brand-new ideas and developed them on top of other individuals’s work. Because their work is released and open source, everyone can make money from it.
